Shell’s Atmos ESG profile is an environmental gap, not a slogan
In the curated table the iOS app uses, SHEL scores much lower on environment than on governance. That is an Atmos estimate, not a licensed rating, and not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold Shell.
| Pillar | Atmos curated estimate (0–100) |
|---|---|
| Environmental | 38 |
| Social | 61 |
| Governance | 67 |
| Simple average | 55 |
| Band on that average | A (55–69) |
Source: ExternalESGService curated profile for SHEL, inspected 14 September 2026. Simple average (38+61+67)/3 = 55.3. In-app watchlists can also apply sector weights and a completeness penalty. Other vendors will differ.
Why a single “ESG score” misleads here
A composite in the A band can still sit on a weak environmental estimate. If a UK ISA is heavy Shell, BP, Exxon or Chevron, the book’s E bar will usually be the drag in this model — even when G looks ordinary. That is the same shape as Exxon Mobil and Chevron in the same table, not a unique Shell “gotcha”.
Compare the other direction: Shell vs NextEra (energy vs a utilities name with a much higher E estimate).
